WILLED BY THE PEOPLE, I COMMEND YOU TO THIS YET ANOTHER NATIONAL ADVENTURE - Pandit Jawaharalal Nehru The LATE PRIME MINISTER JAWAHARALAL NEHRU had a deep sense of history and it is in this context that we have to view the words he pronounced while laying the Foundation Stone of the Port of Paradip on 3rd January,1962.He was perhapsreferring tc the historic seafaring tradition of the Kalingas (Orissa) who in the yonder days had the daring spirit to undertake long voyages to far off countries like Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia and other regions of South East Asia. One of the major contributions of the people of Orissa to independent India is the vibrant fast growing Major Sea Port-Paradip. The Airport at Bhubaneswar is no less noteworthy.Since commissioning of the Port on 18th April, 1966 there has been a full in the developmental activities for a few years. But in recent years the Port is in full steam with developmental and expansion programmes. Traffic growth is incredible-a quantu jump from about 18 million tons, the port is now poised to 36 million tons, the port is now poised to 36 million tons. One of worlds most modern coal handling syste as also new Oil Jetties, have become critical and operational. There was an erroneous notion that the port was unproductive and not conducive to industrial activities. Whatever might have been the cause of such notion, one has to look at matters as it is today. The port has unlimited potential for developent in terms of itshinterland which in fact is the entire heartland of mineral - rich India. The deep natural draft along with easy dredging to any depth and the emmerging dynaic industrial, economic and trade activities, expansion programme now underway and above all a dedicated leadership, points to a great future. The manner in which even the sypercyclone of October 1999 was hanled by the port authorities has become legendary.Paradip Port thus symbolises the seafaring glory of kalinga. It is a major eastern gateway in Indias sea -trade as also economic and industrial growth. Paradip is one of the India's twelve Major Ports, the main out-let and in-let for the sea- borne trade on the eastern part of the country covering states such as Orissa, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar. It is also the nearest deep port for the entire East-North-East part of the country. The natural resources and industrial products of this wide spread hinterland are immense with a natural depth of about 13 metre, the port is located inside a lagoon which offers problem-free berthing facility all the year round. |
